Chapter 22
Simon slowly stirred an enormous pot. He spooned a bit of the thick, lumpy olive green soup out and dumped it into a small cup on the counter beside the stove. Li slid an oven mitt onto his hand and tapped Simon on the arm as he approached the wall oven to the side of him. âStay by your stove. My bread is coming out.â
Simon collected his little cup and scooched back over in front of the stove. He grabbed a spoon and tasted the soup from the cup as Li opened the oven door. âOh, man.â Simon swallowed and placed the cup back on the counter as he moved closer to the first loaf of bread Li had placed on the same counter. âThat looks,â he inhaled deeply through his nose, âand smells heavenly.â
âJust wait until you taste it,â Li replied with a wink.
Sasha appeared at the top of the stairwell near the center of the room. âNow that is a familiar smell. Did my parents stow away in here when we left Mars?â
âItâs Li,â replied Simon. âDude can bake.â Simon stirred the pot one more time before placing the big spoon down on a towel next to the pot. He turned and walked toward Sasha. âYou hear from him yet? Jasper?â
Sasha shook her head. âNo. Nothing yet.â
Simonâs face dropped. âWe shouldâve by now. Somethingâs wrong.â
âIâm sure theyâre fine, hun. Communication with all the groups on Earth has been hell. Hopefully soon. On a positive note, though, Foggen finally has the hol-call aboard the briefing ship working again. We can see Penny after this. I already sent a message to my mom to have her ready and waiting for our call.â
Simonâs face lit up before falling flat once again. âI miss her so much. That little face.â
Sasha leaned in and embraced him. âMe too. Those cheeks.â
âHow you feeling?â Simon rubbed Sashaâs belly. âLittle Simona giving you any trouble in there?â
âOh, gross.â Sashaâs face contorted. âSimona? Seriously, do not ever say that again. Awful. Just awful.â Sasha ended the embrace. âGood, though. Really good, actually. Second time definitely going easier than the first. Course, Iâm pretty well distracted with everything else going on.â
âStill checking in with the doc every day?â
âYeah, sheâs been monitoring me and the little passenger. Sheâs not happy I chose to go along for this but says everything is looking really good.â
âWhatâs lookinâ good?â asked Todd as he emerged from the stairwell with Ben and Jack in tow.
âPreggers,â replied Simon. âDoc says everything going smooth so far.â
âThatâs right.â Todd looked Sasha up and down. âEverything else goinâ on, I forgot youâre pregnant to boot.â
Sasha snickered. âYeah, well, Iâm sure Iâll start showing any day now as a constant reminder. Supposedly it happens sooner with number two.â
Lombargnor appeared at the top of the stairwell accompanied by Foggen. âAh, very good. I see everyone is here already, so we may begin without delay.â Lombargnor remained near the top of the stairwell as everyone gathered around him. âThe first order of business to discuss is the assault on the defense net currently in place around Earth.
